I like the detail and style of this piece individually, but it feels a bit off. There's a kinetic sense of motion or disorientation to it I can't quite define, I think because the focus of the piece lacks a bit in having a near or far focus.
For instance although the suggestion of detail on the left is interesting there is just isn't a hierarchy of perspective of selective details that I come to expect from a concept piece. There feels like there's not enough "negative space" or quiet minimal areas to push the eye towards the emphasis of the composition, though there are many random highly detailed areas that exist regardless to its distance to the viewer in a dense fluid enviro...the right third of the piece is spot on, detailed foreground, soft background. The left however feels like detail and structure were improvised ad hoc and not refined in regards to create a sense of depth.
Sorry to foot a critique in the comment section, Zak, I think your work is truly impressive and you've made bounding leaps in skill & progression since I've last visited so I feel I shouldn't sugarcoat someone of your caliber...
Thanks so much for this detailed feed back!! There was something bothering me about this one, and I couldn't put my finger on it. But after hearing this I think you brought a lot of it to my attention. I need to focus more on how to control a composition. Thanks so much again, and feel free to critique my work any time, feed back like this is why I love sites like DA.
